Gorilla Trekking

Into the Forest.Face to Face With the Extraordinary.

Step beneath the forest canopy and follow expert trackers in search of a mountain gorilla family.

The trek may lead through bamboo, tangled vegetation and steep forest trails. Then, sometimes almost without warning, you find them.

For one remarkable hour, you simply watch.

A silverback resting nearby. A mother with her infant. Young gorillas moving through the forest.

Uganda or Rwanda. We’ll help you choose the experience that fits your journey.

There are wildlife encounters you watch from a distance. And then there is this.

The Experience

What Gorilla Trekking Is Really Like

Your day begins early.

After a briefing, you meet your guides and trackers before entering the forest in search of your assigned gorilla family.

The briefing, before anyone reaches the trailhead.

The trek itself is part of the experience.

You may move through bamboo, rainforest and steep mountain terrain. Depending on where the gorillas are that day, finding them may take an hour—or several.

There is no scheduled appearance. These are wild animals moving freely through their natural habitat.

That is part of what makes the encounter extraordinary.

When your trackers locate the family, you approach quietly and spend the permitted viewing time observing them.

A silverback resting only metres away.

A mother holding an infant.

Young gorillas climbing, playing and tumbling through the vegetation.

Sometimes they barely seem to notice you.

For a short time, you are simply a visitor in their world.

Where to Trek

Two Countries. Three Extraordinary Forests.

Mountain gorilla trekking with Queen Safaris takes you into the protected forests of Uganda and Rwanda. Each offers a different way to experience one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters.

Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Ancient, mountainous and intensely beautiful, Bwindi is one of Africa’s great rainforest landscapes. Trails disappear beneath dense forest canopy as trackers lead you through the mountains in search of habituated gorilla families.

A Bwindi journey can become much more than a gorilla trek. Combine the forest with Uganda’s wildlife, chimpanzees, the Nile, Lake Bunyonyi, culture, coffee or time elsewhere in the country.

Best for — travelers who want gorilla trekking to form part of a deeper Uganda journey.

Uganda

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Where Uganda meets Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Virunga volcanoes rise dramatically above bamboo forest.

Mgahinga offers a different setting for the gorilla experience—smaller, mountainous and beautifully positioned for journeys that can also include golden monkey trekking.

Best for — travelers drawn to volcanic landscapes, primates and a more intimate extension of their Uganda journey.

Uganda or Rwanda?

The Right Gorilla Journey Depends on You.

Both offer exceptional mountain gorilla trekking. The difference is how you want the rest of your journey to unfold.

Choose Uganda

For a broader journey combining gorillas with wildlife, chimpanzees, the Nile and Uganda’s varied landscapes.

Choose Rwanda

For a more focused gorilla journey, with easy connections to other East African destinations.

Or experience both.

Uganda and Rwanda combine beautifully for travelers who want two distinct gorilla trekking experiences in one journey.

Conservation

Why Your Visit Matters.

Mountain gorillas live in a small part of Africa, protected through the work of rangers, trackers, conservation teams and surrounding communities.

Gorilla tourism helps support that work while creating local employment and protecting the forests these animals depend on.

Responsible trekking keeps the gorillas first:

  • Visitor numbers are limited.
  • Permits are controlled.
  • Distance matters.
  • Health rules matter.
  • Your guide’s instructions matter.

The privilege is getting close. The responsibility is helping them remain wild.

Gorilla Trekking FAQ

Questions Before You Enter the Forest.

Planning and Permits

Where can I see mountain gorillas?

Queen Safaris designs mountain gorilla journeys in Uganda and Rwanda.

In Uganda, trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park.

Uganda or Rwanda — which is right for my trip?

Both offer extraordinary encounters. Uganda works particularly well if you want to combine gorillas with a broader safari, primate or adventure journey. Rwanda suits shorter, gorilla-focused journeys and multi-country combinations.

The right choice depends on the journey you want around the trek.

How much does gorilla trekking cost?

The cost depends on where you trek, the type of permit, accommodation, private transportation, regional flights where required and everything you choose to experience around the trek.

Permit fees are set by the relevant wildlife authorities and can change. We confirm current cost and availability when designing your journey rather than building your trip around outdated figures.

Do I need a gorilla permit?

Yes. Gorilla trekking is permit-controlled, and we arrange the permit as part of designing your journey.

Because permits are limited, we recommend making the gorilla decision early in the planning process.

How far in advance should I book?

Permits are limited and availability can become tight during popular travel periods.

If seeing mountain gorillas is the reason you are coming to East Africa, planning well ahead gives you more flexibility with permits, preferred lodges and the rest of your journey. Last-minute travel is sometimes possible, but permit availability should always be confirmed first.

On the Trek

How difficult is gorilla trekking?

Every trek is different. Gorillas move freely, so duration and terrain cannot be predicted precisely — some treks are short, others involve several hours through steep or dense forest.

You do not need to be a mountaineer, but a reasonable level of mobility makes a considerable difference. Tell us honestly how you travel and we will plan accordingly.

What should I wear and bring?

Expect a forest environment: sturdy walking or hiking shoes, long trousers and sleeves, lightweight waterproof protection and appropriate layers.

Bring water, a small daypack, your camera and any personal essentials. Gardening or trekking gloves are useful on some trails. A porter can carry your belongings and help over difficult sections. We provide full preparation guidance before you travel.

How long do I spend with the gorillas?

A standard gorilla trek allows a defined observation period once the family is located — one hour under current Uganda Wildlife Authority rules.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience allows up to four hours, subject to the applicable regulations and the specific permit booked.

How close can I get to the gorillas?

Encounters operate under wildlife-authority rules designed to protect both visitors and gorillas. Your guides brief you on the appropriate viewing distance and behaviour before and during the encounter.

What happens if a gorilla comes close?

Sometimes a gorilla moves closer than expected. Remain calm and follow your guide, who understands the family and the regulations governing the encounter.

Never approach, touch or attempt to interact with them. The privilege is being allowed into their environment — not asking them to enter ours.

Gorilla Habituation

What is gorilla habituation?

A more immersive alternative to a standard trek. You enter the forest alongside experienced trackers and researchers to encounter a family undergoing the gradual process of becoming accustomed to human presence.

It is offered in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, in southern Uganda, subject to the families and permits made available by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Only four visitors are permitted per family.

Gorilla trekking vs habituation — which should I choose?

Choose standard trekking for the classic encounter, particularly if you want to combine it with safari, chimpanzees or other experiences.

Consider habituation if gorillas are one of the defining reasons for your journey and you want longer in the forest. Neither is simply better — the right choice depends on how you want to experience them.

Getting There and Staying

How do I get to Bwindi?

Bwindi can form part of an overland Uganda safari, moving through wildlife areas, highlands and changing landscapes on the way. To reduce driving time, scheduled or charter flights connect Entebbe with airstrips serving the region.

Routing depends on your trekking sector: Rushaga and Nkuringo are approached through Kisoro, while northern Bwindi is reached through Kihihi followed by a private road transfer.

Where should I stay for gorilla trekking?

The lodge is part of the journey. After hours in the forest, where you return matters.

We select accommodation according to your trekking sector, travel style, desired level of privacy and the journey surrounding Bwindi, Mgahinga or Volcanoes National Park — not simply because a property is called luxury.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with safari or chimpanzee trekking?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons Uganda works so well for gorilla travel. A single journey can bring together mountain gorillas and wild chimpanzees, and the two feel completely different.

You can also combine the forest with wildlife safaris, golden monkeys, the Nile, culture and mountains — or continue into Kenya or Tanzania and finish beside the Indian Ocean.

One Final Question

Is Gorilla Trekking Worth It?

Mountain gorilla trekking is difficult to explain before you experience it.

You enter the forest hoping to see gorillas. Then the trackers stop. Somewhere through the leaves, a family is waiting.

For one remarkable hour, you are simply there with them.

You walk into the forest knowing what you came to see. You walk out understanding why people return.
