Chimpanzee Trekking
Follow the CallsInto the Forest.
First, you hear them. A distant call rises through the canopy. Another answers. Then the forest erupts — branches moving overhead, leaves falling, a dark figure crossing between the trees and gone almost as quickly as you saw it.
Then another appears.
Wild chimpanzees. Extraordinary forests. One journey designed entirely around you.

Chimpanzee trekking is not gorilla trekking. It is faster. Louder. More social.
The Experience
What Chimpanzee Trekking Is Really Like.
Chimpanzees move. Sometimes quickly.
Your tracker follows signs through the forest and listens for calls that can help locate the community. You may hear the chimpanzees before you see them.
Once you find them, the experience can change from minute to minute. They may be feeding in the trees, resting, grooming one another or moving through the forest.
Unlike an ordinary wildlife sighting, you are following them through their own habitat. That unpredictability is part of the experience.
And then, for a moment, it looks back at you.
Where to See Chimpanzees
Three Countries. Three Different Experiences.
Uganda combines chimpanzees easily with gorillas and safari. Rwanda pairs them with Nyungwe’s rainforest and a wider journey through the country. Western Tanzania offers something more remote, with chimpanzees in forests along Lake Tanganyika.
The best choice depends on what you want the rest of your journey to include.
Uganda
Kibale National Park
Uganda’s great primate forest
If chimpanzees are a major reason for coming to Uganda, Kibale should be high on the list. Walk through tropical forest with experienced trackers in search of one of its chimpanzee communities.
Kibale is also known for its remarkable primate diversity, with monkeys, birds and other forest wildlife adding to the experience.
For travellers wanting more time with the chimpanzees, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience may also be considered.
Best for — travellers making chimpanzees a priority, photographers, and journeys combining primates with safari.
Uganda
Kyambura Gorge
Chimpanzees within a Queen Elizabeth safari
Kyambura Gorge offers a very different way to include chimpanzee tracking in Uganda. The gorge lies within the wider Queen Elizabeth National Park landscape, making it possible to combine time in the forest with a classic wildlife safari.
Descend into the forest with your guide in search of chimpanzees, then continue exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park for elephants, buffalo, hippos, lions and other wildlife.
What makes Kyambura particularly appealing is the combination. You do not need to choose between a primate experience and safari — both can form part of the same stay in Queen Elizabeth.
Best for — travellers who want to include chimpanzee tracking naturally within a Queen Elizabeth National Park safari.
Uganda
Budongo & the Murchison Falls Landscape
Chimpanzees, wildlife and the Nile
Budongo Forest gives travellers the opportunity to include chimpanzee tracking as part of a wider journey through the Murchison Falls region.
This is what makes it different from a chimpanzee-focused stay in Kibale. Here, the forest can be combined with game drives in Murchison Falls National Park, where elephants, giraffes, buffalo and other wildlife inhabit the savannah.
The Nile is another major part of the experience. A boat journey brings you close to hippos, crocodiles and river wildlife before reaching the powerful Murchison Falls.
For travellers who want chimpanzees without building the entire journey around primates, Budongo can fit naturally into a broader northern Uganda safari.
Best for — travellers who want to combine chimpanzee tracking, safari and the Nile in one part of Uganda.
Rwanda
Nyungwe National Park
Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda’s rainforest
Nyungwe National Park is Rwanda’s main destination for chimpanzee trekking and one of the largest remaining montane rainforests in Africa.
Trek with experienced guides through the forest to locate chimpanzees and observe them as they move and feed through the canopy.
Chimpanzees are only part of the reason to spend time here. Nyungwe is also known for its other primates, birdlife, forest trails and canopy walkway, making it easy to spend more than one day exploring the park.
Nyungwe also fits naturally into a wider Rwanda journey, combining well with Lake Kivu, Kigali, Akagera National Park and mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Best for — travellers who want to combine chimpanzees with other primates, rainforest experiences and a wider journey through Rwanda.
Tanzania
Mahale Mountains National Park
Chimpanzees on the shores of Lake Tanganyika
Mahale Mountains National Park lies in western Tanzania, where forested mountains meet Lake Tanganyika. It is remote, beautiful and home to one of Tanzania’s best-known populations of habituated wild chimpanzees.
Chimpanzee trekking takes you into the forest with experienced guides to locate the chimpanzees and spend time observing them as they move, feed, rest and interact.
What makes Mahale particularly unusual is the setting. A morning in the forest can be followed by an afternoon beside Lake Tanganyika — a combination you will not find on a conventional safari route.
Best for — travellers who want a remote chimpanzee experience and are willing to go beyond Tanzania’s traditional northern safari circuit.
Tanzania
Gombe Stream National Park
Chimpanzees, Lake Tanganyika and a remarkable research history
On the forested shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe Stream National Park is one of Africa’s most important places in the history of chimpanzee research.
Dr Jane Goodall began her work here in 1960, and her research transformed scientific understanding of wild chimpanzees.
Today, travellers come to Gombe to trek chimpanzees in the same forest landscape, with Lake Tanganyika forming an extraordinary backdrop to the experience.
Best for — travellers particularly interested in chimpanzees, conservation and the history of primate research.
Uganda, Rwanda or Tanzania?
Where Should You Trek Chimpanzees?
Each offers a different experience. The best choice depends on what else you want to see and how you want to travel.
Choose Uganda
Choose Uganda if you want chimpanzee trekking to be part of a broader wildlife journey.
Kibale National Park is the country’s best-known chimpanzee destination and can be combined with mountain gorillas in Bwindi, safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, other primates, and time on the Nile.
Uganda also offers the option of chimpanzee habituation for travellers who want more time observing chimpanzees.
Choose Rwanda
Choose Rwanda if you want to combine chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park with other experiences within Rwanda.
A journey can pair Nyungwe’s chimpanzees and other primates with mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, with Kigali and other parts of the country incorporated along the way.
Choose Tanzania
Choose Tanzania if you are looking for a more remote chimpanzee experience in western Tanzania.
Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains offer chimpanzee trekking in forested landscapes along Lake Tanganyika. These areas require more planning to reach, but they work particularly well for travellers who want chimpanzees to be a significant part of the journey.
You Don’t Have to Choose Just One
Your journey can cross borders. We can combine chimpanzee trekking with gorillas, wildlife safari, the Nile, Lake Tanganyika or time on the Indian Ocean — depending on what you want from your time in East Africa.
Design My Chimpanzee Journey →Chimpanzee Habituation
Stay Longer. Observe More.
Standard chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation are different experiences. The main difference is how much time you spend with the chimpanzees.
What the Experience Actually Is
With standard chimpanzee trekking, visitors spend up to one hour with the chimpanzees once they have been located.
The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience allows up to four hours with a chimpanzee community. This gives you more time to observe their behaviour, movement and interactions.
The experience starts early and is done with experienced guides and trackers. Expect to spend several hours in the forest, including the time needed to locate the chimpanzees.
Where, and Whether It Is for You
In Uganda, we arrange chimpanzee habituation in Kibale National Park, subject to current permit availability and park operations.
Choose standard chimpanzee trekking if you want to see chimpanzees while leaving more time in your itinerary for other activities.
Choose chimpanzee habituation if seeing chimpanzees is a major part of your trip and you would prefer more time with them.
The right choice depends on how you want to spend your time.

When to Go
When Is the Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking?
Chimpanzee trekking is available year-round in Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.
Drier months generally mean easier forest trails, while wetter months bring greener landscapes and different forest conditions.
The best time for your trek depends on where you’re going and what else you want to experience — gorillas, safari, hiking, birding or the Indian Ocean.
We’ll help you choose the right season for the complete journey.

Conservation
Why Your Visit Matters.
Chimpanzee trekking depends on healthy forests and the people who protect them.
Responsible tourism helps support conservation, rangers, trackers, guides and communities around protected areas.
We follow local wildlife regulations, keep the required distance and always follow the guidance of experienced trackers.
The goal is simple: experience wild chimpanzees without changing the way they live.
Chimpanzee Trekking FAQ
Questions Before You Enter the Forest.
Planning Your Journey
Where is the best place for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda?
For a dedicated chimpanzee experience, Kibale National Park is our principal recommendation.
But “best” depends on the journey. Kyambura Gorge can work beautifully for travellers already exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the Budongo and Murchison landscape can be relevant to travellers exploring northern Uganda, subject to current tracking operations.
We choose the forest around the journey you actually want.
Where can I see chimpanzees in Rwanda?
Nyungwe National Park is Rwanda’s signature chimpanzee destination.
The forest can be combined with other primates, hiking and a wider Rwanda journey incorporating Lake Kivu, Akagera, Kigali or mountain gorillas.
Where can I see chimpanzees in Tanzania?
Western Tanzania offers two extraordinary names: Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park.
Both combine wild chimpanzees with the remarkable landscapes surrounding Lake Tanganyika, but each offers a different journey and a different history.
How long is chimpanzee trekking?
There is no fixed total trekking time. Chimpanzees move freely through the forest, so finding them can take more or less time depending on where the community has travelled.
The regulated viewing period after locating them depends on the destination and experience booked. In Uganda’s standard UWA-managed chimpanzee tracking experience, the maximum viewing period is currently one hour.
How much does chimpanzee trekking cost?
The total cost depends on the country, the permit or experience booked, accommodation, transportation and everything you choose to combine with the forest.
Official permit fees and regulations can change. Rather than building your journey around an old figure found online, we confirm the applicable current permit cost and availability when planning your trip.
How far in advance should I book?
If chimpanzees are central to your journey — particularly if you want habituation, specific high-end accommodation, or a complex gorilla-and-chimpanzee itinerary — planning ahead gives us greater flexibility.
Availability should always be confirmed before the rest of the itinerary is built around the experience.
What is the minimum age for chimpanzee trekking?
Minimum-age rules vary by destination and can change. We confirm the current requirement for the specific park and experience when designing a family journey.
For families with younger travellers, we can build appropriate alternative activities into the itinerary.
How difficult is chimpanzee trekking?
Every forest is different. Terrain can be muddy, steep, slippery or uneven, and chimpanzees can move rapidly.
A reasonable level of mobility and appropriate footwear make the experience much more comfortable. Tell us about mobility concerns before you travel.
We would rather design intelligently around you than pretend every trek suits every traveller.
Can I see chimpanzees and gorillas on the same journey?
Absolutely. In fact this is one of the great reasons to consider Uganda, or a Uganda–Rwanda combination.
Chimpanzees and mountain gorillas offer profoundly different encounters. Experience both and you begin to understand why a great-apes journey is much more than simply seeing two species.
Habituation
Where can I do chimpanzee habituation?
Kibale National Park in Uganda is the principal destination we would consider for travellers specifically seeking the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, subject to current Uganda Wildlife Authority permits and operations.
Because this is a specialised and limited experience, we confirm current availability before designing the journey around it.
How long is chimpanzee habituation?
Uganda’s current regulated Chimpanzee Habituation Experience permits a maximum of four hours of viewing with the chimpanzees.
That creates a considerably deeper experience than standard tracking.
Trekking or habituation — which should I choose?
Choose standard tracking if you want the classic chimpanzee encounter and are combining it with other experiences.
Choose habituation when chimpanzees are one of the defining reasons for your journey and you want considerably more time observing them.
Neither is simply better. They answer different kinds of curiosity.
On the Trek
Will I definitely see chimpanzees?
Chimpanzees are wild animals. There is no stage and no scheduled appearance.
Experienced trackers use their knowledge of the forest and chimpanzee movements to locate habituated communities, but responsible wildlife travel should never pretend a wild animal is performing on demand.
The uncertainty is part of what makes finding them matter.
What happens if a chimpanzee comes close to me?
Remain calm. Do not approach, touch, feed, chase or attempt to interact with it.
Follow your guide’s instructions and allow the chimpanzee to determine its own movement.
The goal is observation. Not interaction.
Can I photograph chimpanzees?
Yes, subject to the rules governing the destination and trek. Flash photography should not be used.
Forest photography can also be challenging: changing light, dense vegetation, and chimpanzees moving rapidly between canopy and forest floor. Come prepared.
Then remember occasionally to lower the camera.
